Frogstomp was recorded and mixed in 9 days in late 1994 and early 1995 according to legend. A song per day in the studio is considered quite fast, even for seasoned pro's much less 15 year old kids. Kevin Shirley was assigned as their Producer. A lot of the guitar gear used was Shirley's equipment since Daniel had not yet acquired many of his guitars or amps. Notably, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul and a Gibson Firebird were plugged into 100 Watt Marshall JCM900 4100 amps. Chris was using G&L bass guitars through unknown amps. Ben was using Tama drums. The album was recorded to 24 track 2" analog tape like most records of the time. The album is pretty basic and the production is raw as in there are very few, if any, studio tricks, effects or orchestrations - just the band playing their instruments live and a few overdubs. Its a very honest effort with nothing to hide behind. Not to make a Nirvana comparison but their first album, Bleach, was mostly recorded and mixed in a single day with very little "production" save for a few overdubs. There is a similar rawness and immediacy to the sound of Frogstomp. Its just a rock band playing their instruments. I think that is why it was received so well and stands the test of time. The songwriting may not be expert level and the songs may be super derivative but there is no denying that the kids were talented and they could rock as much as anyone.
